At the heart of many traditional family Christmas dinner tables, you might expect to find a plump and succulent turkey surrounded by all the trimmings as well as a few festive decorations.
As any discerning host knows, the sourcing of the centrepiece turkey is just as important as its cooking when it comes to guaranteeing a moist and delicious meat.
This year, Priory Farm’s master butcher, Andy MacNeill, and his team are proud to be stocking award-winning, free-range turkeys from Bramble Farm, near West Horsley, in Surrey.
Recently named Food Producer of the Year at the 2018 Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards, where Priory Farm also picked up the Farm Shop of the Year title, the Joy family have been farming the highest quality bronze turkeys since 1929.
The expertise and family passion for their flock (or ‘rafter’ as groups of turkeys tend to be known) really shines through when you meet owner Adrian Joy, who is the third generation of the family to run the business.
While it takes a lot of love, care and attention throughout the year to ensure the turkeys are at their best, it turns out that there’s a very simple reason free-range birds taste so much better than those you might find on supermarket shelves.
“Most supermarket turkeys haven’t matured,” says Adrian. “Ours are nearly twice the age of a supermarket bird and so have an amount of intramuscular fat, which only comes from reaching maturity. What that means is you get a flavoursome, succulent bird.”
They really are delicious and at Priory Farm we have a range of sizes available to order by early December. These range from six servings to 18 servings, so whether you’re enjoying a quiet lunch with your significant other or have the whole tribe visiting for Christmas we’ve got the turkey for you.
Of course, our butcher’s counter is also the place to go for your pigs in blankets and chipolatas, and you can stock up on everything from beer to cheese via condiments in our award-winning farm shop.
As an added bonus, Bramble Farm’s Adrian Joy will be joining us to share his turkey knowledge at our Christmas Food Festival on Saturday November 24, 10am to 4pm, and Sunday November 25, 10.30am to 4pm.
This free event is the perfect opportunity to speak to a Surrey farmer and learn more about his family’s story and their farm, as well as place your Christmas turkey orders, of course.
Bramble Farm will be joining around 40 suppliers of artisan and locally-produced fine food and drink, all offering seasonal tastings as well as the chance to buy delicious gourmet goodies for your festive table.
