 Your Gardening Essentials

Water-wise for a blooming lovely garden

We show you how
Now is the time to be using a soil conditioner to encourage growth and yield by giving the ground a real boost of essential nutrients that plants thrive on. Robust, healthy plants bestow rich rewards! More tips:

After digging, work in compost and mulch with more compost or wood chips to vastly improve moisture-retention.

Put carpet or plastic sheets on beds to keep in precious moisture. Remember to roll back the covering when it rains!

Line trenches with old newspapers and compost - this is particularly useful for beans and sweet peas.

When preparing tubs, incorporate water-retentive gel (available from the Plant Centre) and position planters away from direct midday sun.

Sow grass seed NOW! Disturb soil as little as possible - rake the area, sow seed and sprinkle lightly with compost. Grass doesn't need much moisture to germinate - dew is often enough. Ask our advice on the best seed for your patch.

Manage greenhouses carefully - shutting down at night to keep the heat in but venting during the day to stop temperature build up.

Ask us about bespoke irrigation systems - even a small downpipe diversion can make an immense difference! Call Seb on 01737 823500.

Grafted is best!

Try our grafted vegetables
Grafted vegetables are easy to grow and offer very reliable crops. They deliver superb value for money and are environmentally friendly too.

Because grafted vegetable plants have stronger natural defences to pests and diseases, they grow successfully without chemical intervention compared to non-grafted plants. Fewer or no pesticides are needed to keep them in good condition which means less soil pollution and purer, healthier produce for you.

Orchids - our top three tips for these exotic beauties

To mark Orchid Day at Priory Farm on Sunday 26 August 2012, we share some essential advice
Water: don't over water. More orchids are killed by over watering than anything else, so it's important that you leave an orchid until the roots and compost are almost dry before watering again.

Feed: orchids benefit from a correctly balanced and quality feed, however it's important to water between feeds. They don't like a build up of salts in their growing medium so it's vital to flush an orchid with water before feeding again to avoid any build up.

Shade: keep orchids in the shade. In the wild orchids grow under the jungle canopy and are mostly in the shade. Because of this it's important to keep them out of direct sunlight.
